Web Quest

A Web Quest is an activity that involves students visiting a variety of websites for a particular project. This one is called “Happy Holidays!”.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS WEB QUEST

Feel like a holiday? Then have a go at this Web Quest. Record all your information in your maths book. You will be sharing your Web Quest with the class afterwards.

Step 1

In your group decide where you want to go for a two week holiday to an overseas country. Visit google maps and find your destination.  Name your destination and name some nearby towns, cities or countries. Use the “Satellite” and “Terrain” options. Describe what you see. (Side quest 1: Find out what “terrain” means using dictionary.com).

Step 2

You are going to have find out what the weather is like where you are going so you know what type of clothing to pack (remember the seasons are the opposite in the Northern Hemisphere). Visit Yahoo Weather and record your findings. What clothes will you need to bring? What types of activities might you be doing, i.e. skiing, swimming, etc?

Step 3

You are now going to find out how much it costs to fly to your destination. Visit “Flight Centre” and put in the necessary details. Write down how much the flight is going to cost – remember you need a “return” ticket or you will be stuck overseas!

(Side Quest 2: Go to “How far is it between?” and write down the distance in kilometres, make sure you check it is not set to give the result in miles!)

Step 4

I am going to give you $2000.00 Australian dollars as spending money! Visit the currency converter website and write down the name of the countries currency and how much you will get.

Step 5

Go to Wikipedia and find out some facts about the country you are going to. Draw a picture of the flag in your book.

Puzzle of the Week

Have a look at this picture of a 3D chess board…

How many blocks or cubes would you need to create this?

ICT Activities for Wednesday 17th June

The first activity I would like you to do is to visit the website of Robin Hood Primary School. On Monday we watched their video about learning using technology and had a discussion about that and their website. Please take some time to investigate their website and maybe leave some comments.

Next I would like you to sign up to Tutpup using our class account. To do this click on the green button, “Join now”. On the next page you can choose your animal and colour. Make sure you click “yes” for “Do you have a class code?”. Our class code for 3/4T and 3/4K is koala34

The last task (if you have time) is to visit the ArtAptation project website to see what the RMIT students have done.

Just another brick in the wall!

Puzzle of the Week

This one is a real challenge, please leave a comment on how you went!

Tikatok – Imagine a Story

Today, some students in 3/4T used a website called Tikatok, a place where students can create their own books. Each student will get the opporunity to create their own login and password.

If your parents could give me their email address I can link them to our account. For more information, read this extract from the email sent to me:

Validate Account Using Parent Email (Optional)

Now that each child is visible to you, you have the option to validate their accounts by entering their parents’ email addresses. Providing parent email addresses for students is not required, however it does allow parents to be involved in your class project. When a parent email is entered for a student, a notification email is sent to the parent informing them of your class project and inviting them to view their child’s work online. It’s a great way to encourage parent involvement and support for each student. To do this, go to your dashboard and click the pink email button to enter an email for each student and enter the parent’s email address.

Your classroom is now ready to start writing! With Tikatok.com your class can:

  • Write and illustrate stories
  • Collaborate with each other
  • Read and post comments on their classmates’ stories
  • Chat using your private classroom message board”

Times Table Practice

Hey kids, there is a new website called “tutpup” where you can compete with kids from all over the world in times tables, general maths and spelling. Get your mum and dad to register for you. Also check out “HonorPoint” for more times table practice!

Nintendo DS in the Classroom

Land Grab!

Today the kids played a maths game called “Land Grab”. Students roll two dice and then multiply the numbers to work out how much land they can ‘grab’. They use the coloured squares to create an array to represent the multiplication problem each time.

Puzzle of the Week

Try these sliding puzzles, the first one challenges you to get the numbers in order and the second has a range of pictures to mix up then solve. Good luck!
